ESON Partners with The Lung Association

On February 23, 2012, the Edmonton Science Outreach Network partnered with the Alberta Lung Association hosted its third EnviroBLAST (Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today) for 75 junior high students and  teachers from the Edmonton area at Grant MacEwan University. This full day event exposed students and teachers to a variety of presentations on air quality issues such as radon gas, indoor air quality issues, GIS mapping, rates of asthma, and the affects of air quality on athletes. In addition, they participated in numerous scientific labs such as: using a scanning electron microscope, LC Mass Spectrometry, Dust Track Demonstrations, and doing a titration in relation to acid rain. After the day ended the work begins for the students as they have been challenged to develop a project on a specific air quality issue or to increase awareness in their communities for Clean Air Day that will be held at City Hall on June 6.
