Top Story - APEGGA volunteers join networks to deliver in-class presentations!

ASLA and APEGGA are excited to announce the merger of two existing classroom outreach programs. Known as, Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom, the merged program will be launched in September 2010, by Calgary Science Network (CSN) and Edmonton Science Outreach Network (ESON) and transitioning of the program in other areas of the Province will be managed locally on a case by case basis. By working together we can improve efficiencies, reach more schools and fill more requests – particularly in engineering-related curriculum topics.

Anita Rossall P.Eng. President, ASLA has this to say. “ASLA is very pleased to join with APEGGA to deliver the Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom program to Alberta Schools. Partnering with a well-respected professional organization raises our profile and improves our ability to fill requests for presentations. Ultimately teachers and students will be the big winners.”

We welcome APEGGA’s tremendous resource base of practicing engineers and geoscientists, their respected reputation and commitment to science outreach!

APEGGA volunteers in the Edmonton area are encouraged to sign up with ESON to allow a smooth roll out of the program by September 2010. If you are already an ESON volunteer and a professional engineer, no action is needed.

Teachers please use the online booking to request a FREE presentation at your school. Requests are filled on a first come, first served basis and are subject only to volunteer availability.

2010 Heritage Science Teacher Workshops

Have you ever wondered how different medical technologies such as MRI, X-ray,

CAT and PET scans work? What happens in a diagnostic laboratory? How are vaccinesmade? Have your students asked you about career choices? Did you everconsider suggesting the field of diagnostic imaging? Here is your chance to learn about the above and do hands-on experiments using aspectrophotometer to analyze chemicals in food, perform an ELISA (enzyme-linkedimmunosorbent assay) and flow cytometry.

This FREE 3-day workshop will cover the topics above and more, and you get tohear about “hot-off the press” research being conducted by the scientists usingthese technologies. This workshop will help you as teachers to understand the topicbetter thereby enabling you to teach it more effectively. Having taken part in doingthe experiments, you will be able to draw upon personal experiences thus makingyour lesson more meaningful. Let’s keep the love of science alive! The workshops are hosted by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, and will run at the University of Alberta — July 13th to 15th 2010, and at the University of Calgary — July 20th to 22nd 2010.
